Getting the Most from Your Next Professional Pole Dance Photography Shoot
These recommendations are from Candra Cain’s webinar ”Getting the Most from Your Next Professional Photography Shoot.” IPIA members can view the entire webinar at this link.
Professional photographer Candra Cain shared valuable insights on how to prepare for and get the most out of your next professional photoshoot in this 2021 webinar.
As someone who specializes in both boudoir and pole photography, Candra brings a unique perspective that emphasizes not just technical excellence but creating a comfortable, affirming experience. IPIA Executive Director Colleen Jolly shares some photos Candra took of her and talks about her experience being photographed by Candra.
Why Invest in Professional Photography?
“The biggest reason to get professional photos is if you want to run a grown-up brand, grown-up business, you need to represent yourself as an adult,” Candra explains.
Your website and social media are often the first impression potential clients have of you. Professional photography communicates that you’re serious, polished, and invested in quality.
Professional photos are more than just pretty pictures—they’re content that can serve your business for years. Many studios and dancers use their professional photos for years across various marketing channels, making them a worthwhile long-term investment. IPIA Executive Director Colleen Jolly highlights this during the webinar when she shares an experience, she had at a photo shoot where a friend took the same picture as the photographer but with an iPhone instead of professional equipment and the difference is notable.
Creating a Safe and Affirming Space
The best photographs of people are taken when the model is relaxed and comfortable. If the space you’re in isn’t safe and affirming, the tension will show it your subject’s body language.
For Candra, creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome is paramount. As a queer, plus-sized woman, she understands first-hand how intimidating certain spaces can be. She strives to ensure that her clients see themselves represented in her portfolio and feel genuinely welcome from the first interaction.
What to Expect During a Photoshoot
For first-time clients, here’s what you can expect:
- Outfit Selection: Bring multiple options, and don’t be afraid to bring something you think might be too daring. Candra (or any other good photographer) will help you choose what works best for the shoot.
- Posing Guidance: You’ll receive clear direction on where to place your hands, how to position your body, and which angles work best. You don’t have to arrive with modelling experience!
- Support Team: For pole shoots in a pole studio, there’s often a studio owner or instructor present to help with spotting and pose adjustments. If there isn’t someone else available, consider bringing a buddy. This is extra important for pole shoots because holding poses is hard!
- Encouragement: Expect plenty of positive reinforcement and cheerleading throughout the session.
- Post-Processing: After the shoot, you’ll receive a gallery of images to select your favorites, which Candra (or any other good photographer) will then edit with minimal retouching to preserve your natural beauty.
Practical Tips for Your Photoshoot
Candra shared several practical tips that can make a significant difference in your photoshoot experience:
- Don’t attempt difficult poses: Simple, comfortable poses often photograph better than complex tricks where you might be struggling.
- Master moves before the shoot: If you can’t nail a move consistently on your own, don’t try it during a photoshoot—this will only lead to frustration. Instead, do moves you can nail consistently five times in a row at minimum.
- Avoid lotion: “Lotion equals death” when it comes to pole in general. Don’t apply any lotions or oils on the day of your shoot.
- Consider professional makeup: For certain types of shoots, professional makeup can enhance your photos, though it’s not always necessary, especially for dramatic lighting setups. If you’re comfortable doing your own makeup, you may not need to hire a professional makeup artist.
- Communicate your needs: Let your photographer know about any insecurities or specific things you want to highlight or minimize.
Finding the Right Photographer
When selecting a photographer, consider these factors:
- Insurance: Confirm your photographer is insured, especially for pole photography where safety is a concern. If your photographer trips over a mat and breaks their equipment or themselves—that’s on you if they’re not insured.
- Style: Look for a portfolio that resonates with your aesthetic and brand.
- Comfort level: The connection between you and your photographer is crucial. If your photographer doesn’t make you feel comfortable in the first interaction, they aren’t the right photographer for you.
- Experience with pole: Photographers familiar with pole dancing will know when to capture the perfect moment and understand the physical demands. To learn more about what to look for in a pole photographer, check out this webinar with PoleCon photographer Lakin Jones.
Final Thoughts
Professional photography is an investment in yourself and your brand. The right photographer will not only capture stunning images but will make you feel beautiful, strong, and worthy throughout the process.
Whether you’re a studio owner looking to showcase your space, an instructor promoting workshops, or a dancer documenting your journey, professional photography can elevate your presence and help you connect with your audience in a powerful way.
